The Beast

A Small Fantasy World…

The ground groaned and roared, causing Orly to startle in the middle of the night. He heard his mother’s voice from his parents’ room, and the quick scuffling of his parents’ feet. Orly picked up his clock so he could read it: it was three in the morning.
“What is happening?” Orly heard someone from the village shout. A beast howled, and from out Orly’s window, lights from houses spotted.
Orly clinged to his bedframe, his legs curled up to his torso. He closed his eyes and tried to pretend that whatever was happening, wasn’t.
His door opened, and Orly jumped in his spot, clinging up higher to his bedframe. The warm face of his mother peaked around the door, cold with fear.
“I’m sorry baby, I didn’t mean to startle you.” She entered the room, and Orly now realized that she was holding his shoes. Hers were already on. “But we have to leave, right now.”
“Where are we going?” the young boy asked. Orly’s mother gave him his shoes by putting them on the bed, and he reluctantly pulled them on. His mother was quickly emptying Orly’s clothes into a big bag.
A dreadful, windy noise thundered over their home as something sinister passed by. It’s shadow drowned out the other town lights from Orly’s window. Orly’s mother dived to the ground, and Orly pulled the covers over his head. The creature lingered enough to release a high, terrifying screech. The mother and son quickly covered their ears, like in the drills Orly practiced at school. 
“But why can’t-” Orly started, but his mother rushed to cover his mouth.
“Do not let it hear you,” his mother…
